Building cyber defense strategies to counter increasingly agile attacks
Threat actors are leaning on new tools and techniques to improve the efficacy of their attacks, which will require organizations to lean on artificial intelligence and machine learning in their cybersecurity strategies.
That’s according to Derek Manky, Chief Security Strategist and VP Global Threat Intelligence at Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs, who joined CyberScoop in a recent interview to discuss the changing threat landscape over the past three months.
While there is increasing sophistication and more threats out there, Manky says FortiGuard Labs is seeing an agility factor, where threats, from getting into a system and exfiltrating data, are occurring at much quicker pace.
“But we are also seeing more destruction as well,” says Manky. “These are the double extortion, triple extortion, and targeted attacks.”
He elaborates on new techniques threat actors are employing — such as defense evasion, wiper malware and firmware attacks — and how AI and machine learning tools are critical for fighting against them.
